This CNN image was one of many cover shots about the fantastic home run chase of 1998 in which the 37 year old home run record held by Yankee, Roger Maris would be broken not by one player... but two!
The media didn't seem to care about steroids and andro and all that... oh no, they loved the chase! But now all of the sudden there's an issue. Are we supposed to be so naive that the media was unaware of rampant steroid use in the MLB? Paleeze!
I don't know if Mark or Sammy did steroids or not. I do know that as a ROOKIE Mark hit 49 home runs a MLB record that still stands after more than twenty years. Mark was a strapping young lad at 6 foot 5 and 225 lbs back then and by the time he retired he was a little bulkier 245 lbs. But when we look at Barry Bonds he was a 6 foot 2 195lb rookie who grew to a massive 228 lbs at retirement. Mark bulked up a bit Barry got HUGE!
Mc Gwire is the real deal and had it not been for injuries that limited his total at bats to less than 6200 he would have hit 800 homers. This guy hit an amazing home run every 10.6 at bats best all time in MLB history including the Babe and Hank Aaron and Barry. He was a golden glove fielder. Make no mistake that at 6-5 his strike zone was ENORMOUS.
I think Mark needs to go into the hall of fame. Yes, his testimony to congress was poorly handled. But Mark belongs in the hall, I say let him in!
