A Tribute to My Parents

My mom and dad were born in 1932 and 1931 respectively. Dad served in the Korean War after enlisting in the Marines in 1949. He did two "tours" and served several additional years in the active reserves and then several more in the inactive reserves before settling down with a family. He left the U.S. Marines as a Gunnery Seargent. He married my mom in 1954. Mom and Dad raised us three kids, Montel 1960, Me 1964 and Denyelle 1971. Dad died of throat cancer in 1992 and mom passed in 1999 of breast cancer. Wonderful people whose lives were cut short due largely to being heavy smokers. Unlike many Baby Boomer parents, my depression era parents made huge personal sacrifices to ensure that we kids had the best opportunity possible. Dad suffered from a variety of disabling illnesses and often money was tight. Us kids never went without and for the most part thought that we were typical middle class Americans. Only later in life did I come to understand how hard they worked to keep us in that middle class by sacrificing their own desires. In the post war materialistic world that must have been very difficult.
